05 / RESORT & NEARBY · SLOVENIA MEETS ITALY

A base for
both sides.

Modern Nova Gorica, historic Gorizia and a landscape of rivers and vineyards. Choose a few good outings, not an exhausting circuit.

Get your bearings

Perla, Resort & Entertainment is at Delpinova ulica 5 in Nova Gorica, Slovenia. It is an urban base near the border with Italy, rather than an isolated resort in the countryside. The combination of hotel, restaurants, wellness and entertainment can simplify a short stay. Its location also makes it possible to give part of your trip to the surrounding region without moving hotels every night.

Nova Gorica and neighbouring Gorizia share a borderland history but offer different urban experiences. Nova Gorica developed as a new town after the Second World War, while Gorizia has an older centre and a hilltop castle. The two cities jointly held the European Capital of Culture title in 2025. That is historical context, not a promise that a particular event from that programme continues during your visit.

Plan the arrival, not just the flight

Compare the full journey when choosing an airport or railway connection. Trieste Airport and Ljubljana Airport are relevant gateways, but the most practical option depends on your origin, arrival time and onward transport. An inexpensive flight can become less convenient if it leaves you needing a late private transfer. Check current timetables and the last usable connection rather than relying on a generic journey-time estimate.

If arriving by train, distinguish Nova Gorica station in Slovenia from Gorizia Centrale in Italy. They are separate stations, and your onward route to the hotel will differ. For drivers, confirm hotel parking arrangements and any height or access restrictions before arrival. Slovenian motorway vignette requirements and Italian road tolls may affect your route; consult current official information and your rental agreement, including permission for cross-border travel.

Start with the two cities

A first outing can connect Nova Gorica with the border area around Europe Square, also known as Trg Evrope on the Slovenian side and Piazza della Transalpina on the Italian side. It is a useful place to understand the relationship between the two cities. Continue into Gorizia if time and energy allow, but check the walking route and distance rather than treating the entire urban area as one compact pedestrian centre.

Gorizia’s castle and historic streets offer a contrast to Nova Gorica’s modern layout. Check opening hours and any admission requirements before building your day around an interior visit. Kostanjevica Monastery, on a hill above Nova Gorica, offers another historical point of interest; access to particular spaces may be scheduled or guided. Allow for gradients and weather when deciding whether to walk or use transport.

River scenery or wine country?

Solkan, on the northern side of Nova Gorica, is associated with the Soča River and its striking stone-arch railway bridge. It is a logical direction for a shorter landscape-focused outing. Use public paths and designated viewpoints; an operating railway bridge is not a walking attraction. River colour and conditions vary, and a scenic bank should never be taken as an assurance that swimming is permitted or safe.

For vineyards and hill villages, consider Goriška Brda, including Šmartno. The Vipava Valley offers a different landscape of settlements, agriculture and wine production. Either area can reward a dedicated outing more than a hurried attempt to cover both. Winery visits may require appointments, and rural transport can be limited. Arrange a non-drinking driver or transfer before including tastings, and check whether a venue also offers food.

Build a realistic short break

On a two-night stay, keep arrival day local: settle in, walk a manageable route and have dinner without a long transfer. Use the full day for one main excursion, then return with enough time for wellness or an evening reservation. Before departure, choose a short outing only if luggage storage and transport timing make it genuinely comfortable. Avoid treating hotel checkout time as the start of an ambitious countryside tour.

Carry appropriate identification when crossing the border, since checks can occur even within the Schengen area. Check current travel advice, weather and transport conditions before setting out. Both countries use the euro, but mobile-plan terms and rental-car conditions still deserve attention. For further destination context, consult Slovenia’s official tourism website, opens in a new tab. The best advantage of this base is flexibility: a good plan leaves you free to choose the city, the hills or simply a slower afternoon.
